Funfetti Cake

Let me preface this post...I am kind of disappointed with the end result, but I just keep reminding myself it was my first time trying this and I didn't really know what I was doing.

Brett's best friend Jordan turned 23 yesterday and last night his parents treated us all to Tucano's (yummy!) so I thought I would make him a birthday cake for our little gathering of games that we will be having tonight...

I have wanted to try using fondant for a while so thought this would be a good time to try it. Jordan loves funfetti cake so I thought I would decorate the outside to kind of resemble the actual cake. I made the fondant myself, even coloring it, I made A LOT of mistakes along the way.

This is the cake before the candles...

With the candles...

Things I learned along the way:
  • Getting the fondant that covers the entire cake to look nice is HARD, even the tools I purchased didn't really help there, I had a couple of cracks and the finished bottom was less than desirable.
  • Never start the process at 9:30pm like it did...I wasn't done till midnight and I was exhausted!
  • Buy ready made fondant, it's gotta be worth the extra couple of bucks, saves a lot of time, a lot of effort and will probably be better anyway! Just find a coupon for Hobby Lobby or Michael's!
  • Don't try and learn this skill at 8 months pregnant like I did...my body was dying afterward! How our sister-in-law made our 3 tiered wedding cake at 8 months pregnant is beyond me! Yes, she has a lot more experience, but still!!
  • Go into your project with a design planned out...mine turned out to be very random as I was ready to go to bed by the time I actually got to the fun part!!
